Since the early days of Germany, beer is a part of its culture. Moreover, Germans are really serious about their beer. The famous Reinheitsgebot, the Bavarian purity law regarding how German beer is made, was passed in 1516 and it still has a powerful influence over the beer production.
Albert V of Bavaria proclaimed that, only during the period from the feast of St. Michael to the festival of St. George, could beer be brewed. Thus, breweries started to store beer underground, mostly along river banks. Eventually, Germans realized that the combination of cold beer and river banks is the perfect summer spot. This is how Biergarten was born.
Biergartens are the best place to enjoy the sun, eat homemade German food and drink Pilsen, lager and darker German beers (or cocktails, if you’re not a beer person). My favorite Biergarten in Berlin is Prater Garten in Prenzlauer Berg. It is the oldest one in Berlin and not much has changed since 1837. My first time there was a few days after I moved from Porto Alegre. Prater Garten is almost an institution in Berlin, because of its beer and food quality. Additionally, this place survived two World Wars, the GDR and the Berlin Wall. And if that is not enough, they can sit more than 600 people in their garden.

My personal favorite Biergarten in Berlin
Prater Garten opens from April to September, such as mostly Biergarten in Berlin (and Germany). However, if the weather does not help, they’ll probably not open. Despite that, you can always visit their restaurant and eat some schnitzel. Schnitzel is meat (veal, pork or chicken) in a very boneless cutlet form, breaded and then deep-fried or pan-fried. Prater Garten looks like a garden, because of the green area and its traditional wooden tables and benches. So, grab your beer and your bratwurst – German sausage with a little bread – and enjoy the sun!Even if beer is not your thing, you can go with some white wine!
Summing up, going to Prater Garten is a classic Berliner experience and it is the way to go in Berlin. Besides that, the Biergarten is a walking distance from Mauerpark and really close to Alexanderplatz. This is the perfect place to escape from the busy streets of Berlin and relax after a busy day.
